Former Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed pitcher Julio Urías has officially been suspended until the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Break for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.
After his second arrest for domestic violence on September 6th, 2023 Major League Baseball and the Los Angels Dodgers placed the lefty administrative leave as part of a joint agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association while the league continues its investigation into his arrest for felony domestic violence charges.
It was the second time that Urías has been arrested on domestic violence charges. In 2019, Urías was arrested after getting into an argument with his wife in a parking lot. His wife later said that she fell on her own.
Julio Urías pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery, and according to court records, four other misdemeanor charges against Urías were dropped. Urias had also been facing one count of spousal battery, one count of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of assault.
Urías, 28, is the first Major League player to be suspended a second time for the violation, which is shocking since the suspension is considerably less severe than other former Dodgers starting pitcher Trevor Bauer who got a 324-game suspension during the 2022 season.
Regardless, the league, despite a near two-year absence from the case, has concluded that Urías was rightfully worthy of a suspension. The next question is, with many teams throughout the league short on pitching due to injuries, will they give him another chance? I’d bet no.
Urías will be reinstated on July 17th, 2025 and would be free to sign with any Major League team.
