Jack Dreyer, signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Dodgers in 2021 as he was coming off of Tommy John. He has excelled in his pitching every year since signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Some History:
Dreyer was drafted by the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2018. His first year with the Hawkeyes, Dreyer went 5-2 with a 3.69 ERA in 14 appearances, pitched 31 2/3 innings, had 42 strikeouts and 15 walk, went 3-1 with a 2.95 ERA as a starter, striking out 24 batters in 18 1/3 inning. Dreyer recorded his third straight win and tallied his first quality start against Penn State in May of 2019, allowed two runs on two hits over six innings, fanning six to tie a career high.
Dreyer missed most of the 2018 with a shoulder injury and had a shorten season in 2020 due to the Pandemic. In the shorten season Dryer logged Iowa’s first seven-inning complete game since 2008 and first shutout since 2016. He had a 3.32 ERA, 23 Strikeouts, held hitters to a .171 average as a starter. In 2021 he missed the whole season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
After signing with the Dodgers in 2021 as an undrafted free agent he spent time in Arizona and only pitched 12 innings. He was promoted to High-A Great Lakes in 2023 and pitched 54 innings for a 2.30 ERA, with impressive strikeout numbers despite struggling with walks. Dreyer was moved up to Double-A Tulsa in 2024, his command showed a drastic improvement, shaving 11% off his walk rate from the previous year allowing zero earned runs and just six hits through 14 innings with Tulsa.
He spent the bulk of his season this year with Triple-A OKC pitching 42 innings, an ERA of 2.20, a WHIP of 0.99, had 72 strikeouts in 57 innings. Dreyer is one of only six minor league pitchers this year with more than 20 innings, a strikeout rate above 36% and a walk rate below 4%.
As for his pitch mix, Dreyer’s fastball has been clocked at 94-95, his slider sits in the mid-80’s and could use some improvement on his curveball. Dreyer’s ability to spot his pitches on the corners has greatly improved and also has the ability hide the ball well in his pitching motion.
In the past two years, Dreyer has a 1.79 ERA through 75 career appearances in the minor leagues, which makes him a good candidate to protect from the rule of 5 draft. Dreyer has the ability to play a key role in a reliever spot for the Dodgers in 2025 and I would not be surprised if we see him sometime in the beginning of year pitching in the majors.
