Dodgers Bolster Farm System with High-Upside Picks: Charles Davalan and Zach Root Highlight 2025 MLB Draft Class

The Los Angeles Dodgers, known for their shrewd drafting and player development, have once again made an intriguing splash in the MLB Draft, adding two highly touted prospects to their pipeline: outfielder Charles Davalan from the University of Arkansas (selected with the No. 41 overall pick) and left-handed pitcher Zach Root, also out of Arkansas (No. 40 overall pick). These back-to-back selections from the same collegiate program underscore the Dodgers’ confidence in the talent emerging from Fayetteville.

Charles Davalan: A “Baseball Nerd” with a Potent Bat

The Dodgers’ selection of Charles Davalan at No. 41 is a testament to his exceptional hitting profile. The 5-foot-9, left-handed outfielder is lauded for what scouts are calling a potentially elite hit tool, with some going as far as to suggest it borders on an 80-grade. Davalan’s contact skills are truly impressive, boasting a high overall contact rate and an even more remarkable in-zone contact rate. He exhibits incredible plate discipline, evident in his strong walk-to-strikeout ratio.

What sets Davalan apart from other pure contact hitters is his surprising power. While not a 30-homer threat, he consistently posts high exit velocities and has the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap, with projections of 12-15 home runs annually at the major league level, coupled with a .300-plus average. His ability to handle high-velocity pitching and spin makes him an incredibly difficult out.

Defensively, Davalan is likely destined for left field, where his arm is considered average. However, the consensus among evaluators is that his bat is so advanced and impactful that any defensive limitations are easily outweighed. Davalan, a self-described “baseball nerd” who originally hails from Canada, moved to Florida to hone his skills, a decision that clearly paid off in his standout collegiate career at Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Arkansas, where he continued to rake against tougher SEC competition. His all-out effort and consistent production have drawn comparisons to current big league stars known for their high-energy play.

Zach Root: A Lefty with a Deep Pitch Mix

Just before selecting Davalan, the Dodgers opted for another Arkansas Razorback in left-handed pitcher Zach Root with the No. 40 overall pick. Root, who transferred to Arkansas after two strong seasons at East Carolina, quickly established himself as a reliable and effective starter in the highly competitive SEC. In his lone season with the Razorbacks, he posted a 3.62 ERA over 99.1 innings, striking out an impressive 126 batters and earning First Team All-SEC honors.

Root brings a deep five-pitch mix to the mound, featuring a fastball, sinker, slider, changeup, and curveball. His slider developed into an elite, swing-and-miss pitch with significant break during his time at Arkansas. His changeup and sinker are also noteworthy for their deceptive, similar release points. While his fastball typically sits in the low-to-mid 90s, he’s shown flashes of touching 99 MPH, indicating untapped potential. Root’s ability to command his off-speed pitches and effectively mix his arsenal makes him an uncomfortable at-bat for opposing hitters.

Scouts praise Root’s ability to locate his secondaries and project him as a high-probability starter with back-of-the-rotation upside in the major leagues. His consistency across his collegiate career and his strong performance against top competition suggest he could be on a fast track to the Dodgers’ big league club.

With these two selections, the Dodgers have added a polished, high-floor hitter in Charles Davalan and a promising left-handed arm with a diverse repertoire in Zach Root. Both players come from a strong collegiate program, providing a solid foundation as they embark on their professional careers within the Dodgers’ esteemed farm system. Fans will be eager to watch their development in the coming seasons.
