Dodgers Farm Player Spotlight: OKC Shortstop Trey Sweeney

Shortstop Trey Sweeney was drafted by the New York Yankees with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Eastern Illinois University. While at Eastern Illinois, Sweeney received Player of the Year in 2021 and was also named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

In December 2023, Trey Sweeney was part of a trade between the Dodgers and Yankees. New York received LHP Victor Gonzalez and 2B Jorbit Vivas for SS Trey Sweeney. Sweeney was assigned to Dodgers Affiliate Double-A Tulsa Drillers that same month before being assigned to Triple-A OKC in March 2024.

Since being assigned to OKC, Sweeney has a .961 fielding percentage and seven errors at the shortstop position, but in the past week, his bat has come alive. In the first 57 games with OKC, Sweeney has been a key player in their success so far in 2024. At the shortstop position, Sweeney has excellent game presence, side-to-side movement, and a strong, accurate arm.

Just last week, Trey Sweeney delivered one of his most impressive performances since joining the Dodgers. In a thrilling six-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes, Sweeney’s bat was on fire. He smashed six home runs, drove in fourteen RBI, scored ten runs, and maintained an impressive .393 AVG. His exceptional gameplay not only earned him the PCL Player of the Week title but also played a crucial role in OKC’s victory in five out of the six games.

So far in the 2024 season, Sweeney has 218AB / 42R / 55H / 9HR / 36RBI / 9SB / .252AVG / .349OBP / .799OPS. Trey has the speed to steal bases and put himself in scoring position, and he has the bat-to-ball skills to either score runners in scoring positions or hit the long ball. After his full season with OKC, Sweeney will give the Dodgers something to look at. The Dodgers are in need of a shortstop, and Trey Sweeney is doing his best to show he could be the next productive shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
