Dodgers Interview: Dalton Rushing on Ohtani’s “explosive” stuff; contributing at the plate

LOS ANGELES — Dalton Rushing had a breakout performance in Sunday’s 13–7 win over the Nationals, reaching base four times and scoring three runs while also handling catching duties for Shohei Ohtani’s second start on the mound. After the game, Rushing praised Ohtani’s sharpness and command, noting, “Everything was obviously explosive… velocity was good, throwing breaking balls, sweepers in the zone. Allowed us to get ahead and put guys away.”
Rushing, who was 2-for-2 with two walks, said he’s starting to feel more comfortable in his role backing up Will Smith: “Maybe I’m getting a little more comfortable in the role… good results today and allowed us to capitalize.”
As for working with Ohtani, he revealed they were “on the same page” and that the superstar even called a few of his own pitches: “He has a plan when he steps on the mound, and it’s my job to support that.”
Reflecting on the Dodgers’ successful homestand, Rushing called it “massive,” adding, “It allows us to take a little bit of a lead and get comfortable… just continue to play good Dodger baseball.” Asked about Ohtani’s all-around dominance—pitching, homering, tripling, and driving in five—Rushing summed it up simply: “He’s a unicorn, man. He does it all.”
