Dodgers Interview: Max Muncy updates fans on scary injury
"Best Case Scenario, Even If It Sucks"

LOS ANGELES — On Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, what should have been a celebratory evening for the Dodgers—marked by Clayton Kershaw’s historic 3,000th strikeout—was also clouded by concern as third baseman Max Muncy was helped off the field with a scary knee injury. Today, Muncy gave an emotional and thoughtful update to reporters, offering both relief and frustration as he begins his recovery.
“It Could Have Been So Much Worse”
Muncy confirmed that the diagnosis is a bone bruise in his right knee—painful and limiting, yes, but mercifully free of structural damage. No ligament tears, no surgery, no months-long rehab. Just rest, treatment, and time.
“It was kind of twofold,” Muncy said. “Tough news, but also great news. When you look at the play and what could have happened, we possibly got best-case scenario. No structural damage—that was a huge relief.”
He described the projected recovery window as around six weeks, give or take depending on how his body responds. “Obviously we’re hoping for the ‘before,’” he said with a small laugh. “But it’s just whenever my body says it’s ready.”
The Moment It Happened
The injury occurred in the top of the seventh when Muncy attempted to apply a tag on Michael A. Taylor stealing third. In a freak collision, Taylor’s helmet slammed into Muncy’s knee as he slid into the bag. Muncy immediately crumpled to the ground in visible pain.
“As I was laying there, I’ll be honest, the first thing I thought about was the end of the 2021 season,” Muncy said, referencing the elbow injury that kept him out of that year’s playoffs. “You just start replaying everything in your head—did I feel a pop? Did I hear anything? It’s not a fun place to be mentally.”
Even more telling was what he was thinking about as the medical staff helped him off the field. “All I could think was, ‘I’m making Kershaw wait.’ That really tore me up. I didn’t want to steal that moment from him.”
Missing the Big Moment
As fate would have it, while Muncy was inside getting X-rays, Clayton Kershaw struck out his 3,000th batter—a moment that sent the Dodger Stadium crowd into a frenzy.
“I heard the roar from the X-ray room,” Muncy said. “And that was honestly the most heartbreaking part. Getting hurt sucks, but not being out there on the field for that moment with Kersh… that was a pretty big blow.”
Looking Ahead
For now, Muncy is walking gingerly, his knee stiff but—importantly—not in significant pain. He’s still waiting on more detailed conversations with the team doctor to finalize his rehab plan, but he says he’s optimistic and eager to return.
“We’re going to be aggressive with treatment,” he said. “But there’s a fine line between coming back fast and coming back right. I’ve always healed fairly quickly, but we’re going to be smart about it.”
While he hasn’t mapped out his full recovery regimen yet, Muncy said the current focus is on reducing stiffness and regaining range of motion. “There’s not a ton of pain, which is encouraging. It’s just not moving how I want it to.”
Next Man Up
With Muncy sidelined, Miguel Rojas and Kike Hernandez could see more reps at third base, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Dodgers explore a short-term trade option depending on how the timeline evolves.
As always, Muncy maintained his signature team-first attitude. “It sucks not being out there,” he admitted. “But I still get to play baseball this year instead of coming back next April. That’s the silver lining.”
Final Thoughts
Injuries are never easy, but Muncy’s resilience and perspective are a reminder of why he’s so respected in the Dodgers clubhouse. His absence will be felt—on the field, in the lineup, and in the dugout—but there’s hope on the horizon.
If all goes well, Muncy could return just in time to help anchor a postseason run. Until then, fans will be rooting for a speedy and safe recovery for one of the heart-and-soul leaders of this Dodgers team.
