LOS ANGELES, CA — Shohei Ohtani’s press conference on Thursday gave the Dodgers’ star a chance to reflect on where the series was at and what he needs to do to get to the next round, where the Amazing Mets are waiting to face either the Dodgers or the Padres. Through his translator, Will Ireton, Ohtani emphasized the importance of teamwork and staying focused, stating, “I’m really focused on winning the game and whatever I can do to help the team win.” Reflecting on the team’s previous win, he said, “It was definitely a team win… we were continuing to press for more.”

Ohtani also touched on his evolving emotions, particularly in big games. Asked about his more expressive nature this season, Ohtani explained, “Playing a regular season game and playing a playoff game is different… a lot of players end up playing with their emotions.” He acknowledged his enjoyment of such moments, particularly those like his memorable duel against former teammate Mike Trout in the World Baseball Classic.

One recurring topic was his ability to perform with runners on base. Ohtani downplayed any strategic change, attributing it to the added pressure on pitchers: “There’s nothing specifically that I’m doing with runners in scoring position… it’s been good that I’ve been able to add on to that.” His walk during the game, he noted, was especially important for his confidence.

Regarding his emotions, especially after a controversial play in which a ball hit by Teoscar Hernandez glanced off the outstretched arm of third base umpire Mark Ripperger and allowed Shohei to be thrown out at home by Manny Machado, Ohtani shrugged it off, saying, “I totally forgot about it.” He remained unfazed by the incident, maintaining his focus on the game.

In his interview with the Japanese media, Ohtani emphasized staying focused and carrying momentum from the previous win, saying, “I’m treating this like we’re going for two straight wins, and we’ve just taken the first one.” He also talked about staying mentally balanced and flexible depending on the situation, whether it’s focusing on the best outcome or preparing for the worst. Lastly, Ohtani highlights the importance of staying confident when returning to home turf, stating, “Having our fans behind us gives me confidence.”

Finally, Ohtani was asked about facing his fellow Japanese star Yu Darvish. He praised Darvish’s versatility on the mound, saying, “He doesn’t rely on one plan… for us as hitters, we have to be able to adjust.” The matchup between Darvish and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the upcoming game was something Ohtani looked forward to, highlighting the respect he has for both pitchers.

So far in the series, Shohei has been good, but not great. Here’s hoping that Friday will give him an opportunity to change that descriptio to the positive.
