LOS ANGELES, CA — Ahead of the NLDS game against the Padres, Dodgers catcher Will Smith expressed confidence in pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s readiness for the postseason. Smith praised Yamamoto’s preparation, noting, “Yoshi knows what he needs to do… I expect him to come in with good stuff today.” He emphasized Yamamoto’s versatility with his fastball, splitter, slider, and other pitches, highlighting the full arsenal he brings to the mound.

Reflecting on facing the Padres, Smith acknowledged their strong lineup, saying, “They’ve got a lot of guys that can drive the ball… they don’t strike out a ton.” Smith mentioned the importance of managing the Padres’ offense with a solid game plan, which he expects Yamamoto to execute well. He also touched on how the Dodgers stayed sharp during their week off by organizing watch parties and getting extra work in as a team.

In discussing the team’s mindset, Smith admitted the previous few postseasons haven’t gone as planned but emphasized that they feel prepared, ready to execute this year.

The conversation shifted briefly to Clayton Kershaw’s absence from the postseason due to injury. Smith expressed his disappointment, “It stinks he’s not going to pitch for us… I know it stinks for us as a team but also for him personally.” Despite Kershaw’s absence, Smith believes the veteran pitcher will remain involved, offering support from the dugout and clubhouse.

Lastly, Smith discussed how he managed the increased workload behind the plate this season, especially with Shohei Ohtani serving as the team’s designated hitter. “I don’t feel fatigued at all,” Smith said, confident in his physical condition going into the playoffs.

With Smith behind the plate and Yamamoto on the mound, the Dodgers are counting on executing their game plan effectively against the Padres in the NLDS.
