Well, Jack Flaherty will be in Los Angeles and could be pitching on opening weekend at Chavez Ravine come March. It just won’t be in a Dodgers uniform.
Numerous MLB insiders, including ESPN’s Jeff Passan, have reported that Jack Flaherty and the Detroit Tigers have agreed on a two-year, $35 million contract. The deal also includes an opt-out after the first season, in which Flaherty will be paid $25 million.
The Dodgers acquired Flaherty from the Tigers at the trading deadline last July in an effort to bolster their starting rotation. At the time, Yoshinobu Yamamoto was sidelined with a tricep injury, Bobby Miller was pitching poorly, and the red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres were gaining ground on the Dodgers in the NL West.
In the postseason, Flaherty started five games for the Dodgers en route to a World Series title. Although he pitched to a 7.36 ERA, he had two terrific outings, Game 1 of the NLCS and Game 1 of the World Series, both of which the Dodgers won.
At the beginning of the off-season, it looked more likely that the Dodgers could opt to bring back Flaherty, but after the team signed starting pitchers Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki, Flaherty’s services became far less of a need.
