Dodgers News: Alex Vesia Away From Team Due to Family Emergency

The Dodgers will be without Alex Vesia for the start of the World Series

TORONTO—The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for their fifth World Series in the past nine years and aim to become the first team in over 25 years to repeat as champions. However, they might have to do so without one of their most reliable relief pitchers.

Before Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ media appearance, the team announced on social media that left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia would be absent from the team with his wife Kayla due to a personal family matter.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter,” The Dodgers said in a statement. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that the team is taking a “day-to-day” approach with no firm expectations regarding Vesia’s availability for the World Series. They are presently exploring different options for constructing their roster and evaluating Vesia’s potential inclusion.

“I think right now, we’re in the mode of trying to understand the process, the rules, a way that we could sort of try to navigate the roster,” Roberts said. “So I think we have a little bit of time — I think 10 o’clock tomorrow or something like that — to finalize our roster. But, yeah, we’re going through the process of trying to backfill his spot on the roster.”

Vesia played in seven postseason games this year, pitching 4.2 innings with a 3.86 ERA, four strikeouts, and a 1.29 WHIP. He was one of four Dodgers relievers in the National League Championship Series. After giving up two runs in his first Wild Card appearance, he then threw six straight scoreless outings.

Vesia was one of Roberts’ most trusted arms out of a shaky bullpen this season, and while his loss will be hard to replace, the Dodgers do have internal options.

If Vesia is unavailable for the World Series, the Dodgers will probably add another pitcher instead of a position player. Their potential options include Tanner Scott, Will Klein, Kyle Hurt, and Edgardo Henriquez.
