Dodgers News: Andrew Heaney Announces Retirement

12-year veteran Andrew Heaney is calling it a career

LOS ANGELES, CA—Over the Christmas holiday weekend, former Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Andrew Heaney announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.

Heaney, 34, announced his retirement on Instagram, concluding a 12-year career that included two periods with the Dodgers (2022, 2025). In his post, the left-hander shared photos of all the teams he played for: the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Dodgers.

Heaney concludes his career with a 4.57 ERA across 1136.2 innings, serving as both a starter and occasional reliever.

Heaney’s last season involved playing for the Pirates and Dodgers, where he recorded a 5.52 ERA over 122.1 innings. After signing a one-year, $5.25 million contract with Pittsburgh last February, his performance issues prevented a trade deadline move. Consequently, the Pirates relegated him to the bullpen and eventually released him at the end of August.

The Dodgers re-signed Heaney on a minor league contract for his third stint with the organization. He played in one major league game in late September but was not part of any postseason roster.

Heaney was selected ninth overall by the Marlins in the 2012 draft and made his MLB debut in 2014. After that season, he was traded to the Dodgers in a significant seven-player deal that sent Dee Strange-Gordon to Miami and brought Enrique Hernandez and Austin Barnes to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers traded Heaney to the Angels later that day in exchange for Howie Kendrick. This trade is historically significant as it was the last player-for-player swap between the two Los Angeles teams.

Heaney returned to Los Angeles during the 2022 season, signing a 1-year, $8.5 million contract. Despite injuries affecting most of the season, he posted a 3.10 ERA and achieved a remarkable 35.5% strikeout rate over 72. innings.
