Dodgers News: Andrew Heaney Recalled, Will Klein Optioned

SEATTLE, WA—Before tonight’s game, the Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled veteran left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned right-hander Will Klein.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Heaney, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Nick Frasso to the 60-day injured list.

Klein appeared in four games during his recent time with the Dodgers, including two consecutive back-to-back appearances. The right-hander pitched 4.2 innings without giving up a run, allowing only two hits, issuing one walk, and recording six strikeouts.

His latest appearance was in the series opener at T-Mobile Park, a bullpen game for the Dodgers following Emmet Sheehan’s quick start. Klein’s velocity was a bit lower than the previous night, but he managed to retire five of the six batters he faced.

Klein’s success this month, along with earlier flashes this season, has put him in contention to join the Dodgers’ postseason bullpen. This is particularly important given their shortage of right-handed options due to injuries and underperformance.

Klein’s overall performance with the Dodgers this season included a 1-1 record, a 2.35 ERA, and a 1.57 WHIP over 14 appearances. He joined the team in June through a trade that sent Minor League pitcher Joe Jacques to the Mariners.

Since the Dodgers used six relief pitchers on Friday night and are probably going to limit Tyler Glasnow’s final start of the season, they needed to add a fresh arm to their bullpen.

Recently, Heaney signed a Minor League contract at the end of August for his third stint with the Dodgers. He reported to the Comets and recorded a 0.90 ERA over four starts.

Heaney had three consecutive scoreless outings before giving up one run in two innings on September 21st. Over his four starts for Oklahoma City, the southpaw recorded 13 strikeouts across 10 innings.

Heaney qualifies for the postseason with the Dodgers because he signed before the September 1st deadline.

Frasso posted a 6-1 record with a 5.49 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 43 games (including seven starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City. His most recent appearance was on September 19, and the reason for his placement on the injured list remains unclear.
