Dodgers News: Ben Casparius Likely to be Used as Starter Moving Forward

SAN DIEGO, CA— After another solid four innings of one-run baseball from Los Angeles Dodgers rookie right-hander Ben Casparius during Tuesday’s series win over the San Diego Padres, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Casparius’s next time on the mound will be as a starter in the rotation.

“Where we’re at now, currently, he’s certainly showing that he’s one of five,” stated Dave Roberts. “The next time he’s on the mound, it’ll be as a starter.”

Casparius, 26, has turned eyes the entire 2025 regular season due to his improved pitching arsenal and the ability to give the Dodgers bullpen some much-needed length while also being depended on in multiple high-leverage situations.

Overall, this season the righty has a 2.86 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and forty-six strikeouts in forty-four innings pitched. Today in San Diego marked a rare start for the former University of Connecticut star, where Casaprius gave the Dodgers a massive boost, filling in as the spot starter with multiple injuries in the starting rotation.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ holes in their starting rotation are no secret. The team is still without key starters Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, and while they are inching closer toward a return, it’s still multiple weeks away.

Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is also progressing well from the Tommy John surgery he had during the 2023 season with the Angels and should return to the rotation by July, but at what capacity still remains to be seen.

The final nail in the coffin was the injury to right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin, who is set to miss the foreseeable future due to right elbow inflammation.

The Dodgers’ starting rotation currently ranks in the bottom third of the league in ERA, WHIP, and innings pitched, and while the team has audition starters such as Justin Wrobelski, Landon Knack, and former ’23 standout Bobby Miller, none of those arms ran away with the job.

However, it will take time for the Dodgers to stretch Casparius out as a starter, even as we enter mid-June, as the righty’s high in innings this season is four, and the max number of pitches he has thrown was seventy on May 5th.
