Lost in the sights of many Dodgers fans over the weekend after the team was swept by the rival San Francisco Giants and pushed down to third place in the National League West. Dodgers start player and part-time shortstop Mookie Betts announced on MLB Network that he would participate in the 2023 T-Mobile Home Run Derby.
However, Betts stated in the video that he would only do it under one condition: that he makes the 2023 All-Star team which, as voting stands right now, he is well on his way to making his 7th All-Star appearance. Betts, who is slugging .505 on the year with 17 home runs, is the first official player to announce they would be competing in the derby so far. However, in the next few weeks, expect more players to start announcing their participation as we get closer to the All-Star break.
Regarding the All-Star Game, the Dodgers have a few players sitting in the top three in voting at their respective positions, with Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, J. D. Martinez, and Mookie Betts leading the way to represent the Dodgers this year. Another Dodgers player that could also toss their hat in the ring barring any setbacks from injury could be Max Muncy, who currently leads the team with 18 home runs. Betts will join Joc Pederson, Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager, and Yasiel Puig as the most recent Dodgers to participate in the event.
