The Los Angeles Dodgers are eagerly anticipating another massive boost in the starting rotation as right-handed pitcher Bobby Miller is set to begin a rehab assignment this Sunday at Rancho Cucamonga.
Miller, 25, has been sidelined due to should inflammation since April 14th after back-to-back subpar starts in Chicago and Minneapolis. The Dodgers have been cautiously optimistic, with Miller shutting down the situation early before it got worse.
Miller, who has been out for over a month now, has reintroduced his throwing program and was facing live hitters in the Dodgers Arizona complex last week.
Prior to Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Miller tossed a three-inning sim game facing Gavin Lux, Miguel Vargas, and Chris Taylor. Miller threw 51 pitches in the outing while also getting burnt for a rare Chris Taylor homerun.
Dave Roberts also stated in his pregame that Miller will get “multiple” rehab starts as he builds back his arm for the major league level. Roberts hinted at this outcome back in Washington, D.C., when asked about Miller’s status, stating that the longer he is out, the more starts hell needs to be activated.
Miller was a massive part of the Dodgers’ 2023 starting rotation, making an immediate impact after his call-up to the show in late May against the Atlanta Braves.
In twenty-two starts, Miller won eleven games with a 3.76 ERA, which earned him the NLDS game two nod in October. Miller was dominant in his first start of the season, tossing six shutout innings and striking out a career-high eleven Cardinals.
The next question is, what route will the Dodgers take when Miller returns? With Walker Buehler‘s recent return, the starting rotation is already full of arms.
Dave Roberts also confirmed that the team was considering all options, including a possible six-man rotation, but hinted that losing a bullpen arm in the process would be tough.
The Dodgers could opt to try to place one of their starters, like Tyler Glasnow, on the IL to load-manage his innings, but we won’t know the full answer until Miller makes his return, as a lot can happen in two to three weeks.
