Dodgers News: Cubs Go Back-to-Back to Draw First Blood against Friars

CHICAGO — The Cubs took Game 1 over the Padres, 3–1, at Wrigley. San Diego grabbed a quick lead on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double in the second, but Chicago flipped it in the fifth with back-to-back solo shots from Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly. Nico Hoerner’s sac fly in the eighth gave the Cubs breathing room.

Padres starter Nick Pivetta missed a lot of bats (9 K in 5 innings) but paid for two mistakes. The San Diego offense managed just four hits and went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. For the Cubs, Drew Smyly Boyd (4.1 IP, 1 ER) set the table, Daniel Palencia got the win in relief, and Blake Keller closed it with a clean ninth. Chicago’s staff struck out 13 and allowed only one walk.

Why it matters for the Dodgers: the winner of Padres–Cubs advances to face the No. 1 seed Milwaukee in the Division Series. On our side of the bracket, the Phillies await the winner of Reds–Dodgers.

And that starts tonight. Game 1 of Reds–Dodgers is at 6:00 p.m. PT at Dodger Stadium. Bring the noise.
