Dodgers News: Dave Roberts on Emmet Sheehan’s Role and Postseason Outlook

LOS ANGELES, CA—The Dodgers used an opener ahead of Emmet Sheehan in Monday’s game, and manager Dave Roberts said there was more to the decision than just the matchup against the Phillies.

“I know it’s about the matchup today, but is there a benefit of seeing how Sheehan plays in relief possibly as we look towards October?” Roberts was asked.

“Yeah, that’s another exercise I think that is a good opportunity for him,” Roberts said.

The Dodgers are still weighing how their pitching staff will line up for the postseason. While the rotation has its anchors, the bullpen picture is still taking shape, and Sheehan could be part of it.

When asked about building the October roster, Roberts kept things open. “I think it’s very fluid. I think that the goal is to get the 13 best pitchers,” he said. “But I think that a little bit of the fluidity is the potential opponent, how guys are throwing in that particular recent part of it. But yeah, I think it’s fair to say you want your best 13.”

For Sheehan, the outing offered both innings and experience in a role that could become his ticket to October. Whether he slots into the rotation down the line or serves as a multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen, his performance in these spots may help decide how the Dodgers build their staff for the postseason.
