Dodgers News: Dave Roberts on Max Muncy’s Heads-Up Play and Status for Phillies Series

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—Max Muncy wasn’t is Sunday’s finale against the Giants as it was a planned off day after being hit by a pitch on the helmet on Friday night, but he still made his presence felt from the dugout.
In the ninth inning, San Francisco’s Drew Gilbert appeared to reach second base safely, but Muncy spotted something others missed: Gilbert never actually touched the first base bag. The Dodgers appealed, the call was overturned, and the out proved key in closing out the win.
Roberts praised Muncy’s awareness. “That was a good catch. Kirby owes him a bottle of wine for that one,” Roberts joked. “That was a great catch by Muncy. Watching the game even though he’s not in the game — that was great.”
As for Muncy’s health after the hit by pitch, Roberts said he came out of the scare fine, but the team will be cautious heading into the big series against Philadelphia. “I’m going to talk to him tonight and see. He’s going to take one of those games off against the Phillies, I’m not sure which one. I’ll decide after talking to him which one makes the most sense.”
The Dodgers open a crucial three-game set with the Phillies on Monday at Dodger Stadium, with playoff seeding implications on the line.
