Dodgers News: Dodgers acquire Amed Rosario second deadline in a row

JEFFEREE WOO | Times

After completing a three-team trade earlier with the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals that brought in utilityman Tommy Edman and relief pitcher Michael Kopech, the Dodgers are making another move, reported trading for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Amed Rosario.

It is the second straight year that the Dodgers have acquired Rosario at the trade deadline. They acquired him last year in the Noah Syndergaard trade, which shipped the righty to the Cleveland Guardians.

During the 2023 season, Rosario provided the Dodgers some much-needed depth in the infield after Gavin Lux tore his ACL/MCL earlier in spring training and allowed veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas some much-needed time off during a long 162-game season.

In his short stint with Los Angeles last season, Rosario hit .256/.301/.408 in forty-eight games, hitting three home runs and driving in eighteen runs.

Rosario signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays over the offseason and has put together a fantastic season, hitting .307/.331/.417 with a 114 OPS+ in 264 at-bats.

The Dodgers are likely to reverse their plan, with Rosario, like last season, getting the bulk of starts against left-handed pitching. He has a career .300/.339/.465 slash line against southpaws.

However, in 2024, Rosario has hit both lefties (.316/.340/.449) and righties (.301/.326/.398) well, and with Muncy and Rojas injured, he could force himself into more of a starting role if he continues to hit well.

Rosario has also played off over the baseball field this season, clocking in innings at second base, shortstop, third base, and right field, and brings an extra layer of versatility the Dodgers seem to be seeking this deadline.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Flynn is going to the Rays, and to make room on the roster for Rosario, the Dodgers have designated left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough for assignment.
