Dodgers News: Dodgers Activate Tommy Edman, Option Justin Dean

Tommy Tanks has officially returned...

LOS ANGELES, CA—After several weeks on the 10-day injured list, the Los Angeles Dodgers have finally activated utilityman Tommy Edman.

Edman, 30, was placed on the IL on August 1st, after suffering a right ankle sprain in Tampa, reaggravating a lingering ankle injury that has plagued the 2024 NLCS MVP since last season.

Now, after a month-plus break, the Dodgers and Edman hope that he can put the ankle injury behind him, especially with the plan to place Edman in center field for the remainder of the season and through October.

After weeks of ramp-up, Edman finally kicked off his minor league rehab assignment on September 2nd and proceeded to go a collective 4-for-14 in five minor league games with the Triple-A OKC Comets.

Edman exclusively played either designated hitter or center field, as the Dodgers wanted to prepare his ankle for the center field job upon his return.

Edman will be the latest position player to return from the injured list, joining third baseman Max Muncy, who returned to the Dodgers’ lineup on Monday.

The former St. Louis Cardinal got off to a fast start to his second season with Los Angeles, but after the ankle injury in May, he leveled out his overall production.

Still, Edman has put together a solid season, hitting .228/.281/.396 with an 86 wRC+ along with twelve home runs. His return will be a solid addition to the team as they head into October.

The Dodgers opted to send outfielder Justin Dean back to Triple-A after the long-time minor league player had been nothing more than a pinch runner/ late defensive inning replacement since his promotion.

Edman’s Return Signals a Possible New Outfield Alignment

With Edman’s return, the Dodgers plan for the utilityman to exclusively play center field, which will change the current outfield alignment.

With Edman taking over center field, a position he holds a .995 fielding percentage at, that’ll move sophomore outfielder Any Pages to one of the corner outfield spots.

The most logical scenario is moving Pages to right field, Teoscar Hernández to left field, and placing Michael Conforto on the bench.

Conforto would likely join Alex Call and Hyeseong Kim in a battle for a bench spot in October.
