Dodgers News: Dodgers Claim Utility Infielder from Twins

The Dodgers have recently claimed DFA’d infielder Ryan Fitzgerald from the Twins

LOS ANGELES, CA—A day after the arbitration deadline across Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly claimed utility infielder Ryan Fitzgerald from the Minnesota Twins, per MLB insider Alden González of ESPN.

Fitzgerald, 31, slashed .277/.367/.469 in 59 Triple-A games last season while also spending 24 games with the Twins, where he only hit .196 but did post a .758 OPS while also slugging four home runs.

The utility infielder was DFA’d last week by the Twins after they acquired Eric Wagaman from the Miami Marlins last week.

Although unitential, the deals over the last two weeks among the Marlins, Twins, and Dodgers became a three-team trade, with the Dodgers shipping Esteury Ruiz to the Marlins last month, prompting the Fish to designate Wagaman for assignment.

Fitzgerald has experience playing all over the infield, which should help the Dodgers with versatility while they gauge the health of Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and Tommy Edman, who is coming off offseason ankle surgery.

Other minor league options that could help the Dodgers this season could be Alex Freeland, who made his Major League debut last summer.

After the acquisition, the Dodgers’ 40-man roster is now back to 40 players, meaning if the team makes any signings over the next several days, they’d need to open up a spot on the roster to make the deal official.
