Dodgers News: Dodgers Lose Tony Gonsolin to Season-Ending Surgery
Tony Gonsolin is the latest Dodgers pitcher to undergo season-ending surgery this year.

ANAHEIM, CA—The injury bug has hit the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff hard over the last three seasons, and today that was no different.
Prior to tonight’s second game of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that the team was placing right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation; however, the injury news did not stop there.
Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman spoke with the media today and announced that right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin underwent a successful internal brace procedure today, ending his 2025 season.
The timeline will put Gonsolin on the road to recovery for an eight to ten-month period.
Gonsolin, 31, missed the entire 2024 season recovering from season-ending Tommy John surgery during the 2023 regular season.
Despite a late attempt in the fall for a possible October role, the Dodgers opted to rest Gonsolin and have the righty start fresh the following spring.
Despite being healthy come spring training, Gonsolin would not make the team’s Opening Day roster after suffering a setback due to back stiffness, opening the door for former Dodgers right-hander Dustin May to secure the final spot in the starting rotation.
Gonsolin would rejoin the team shortly after the start of the regular season but with mixed results, posting a 5.00 ERA across seven starts before landing on the injured list yet again with an arm injury.
On June 7th, the Dodgers placed Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort, and a few weeks later, the “Cat Man” was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
It was already clear that Gonsolin was running out of time to make a return this year.
“We’re going to have to make a decision with Tony soon. I’m not sure what that is, but we’re going to have to make a decision at some point,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said last month.
Roberts mentioned he didn’t know whether Gonsolin’s injury had become worse or if he just hadn’t improved enough to begin throwing again.
“I just know I haven’t seen or heard of him throwing yet,” Roberts said. “I know we’re waiting, but I haven’t dug in on why. “Clearly, he just doesn’t feel good to throw yet, or it might be a time situation.”
During the offseason, the Dodgers avoided arbitration with Gonsolin, agreeing to a one-year, $5.4 million deal, and the right-hander still has one more year of team control before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
With Gonsolin set to likely miss most of the 2026 season after the surgery, there is a scenario where the Dodgers could non-tender him, as with Dustin May, his role on the team seems unclear moving forward, even when healthy.
Regardless of the injuries, Gonsolin has put together a decent Dodger tenure with a career 3.34 ERA, including a 2022 National League All-Star appearance while posting a career-best 2.14 ERA and an elite 16-1 record.
