Dodgers News: Dodgers Release Matt Sauer

After being DFA'd last week, the Dodgers have officially released Matt Sauer

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—After being DFA’d last week to make room on the 40-man roster for minor league catcher Chuckie Robinson, right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer has been officially released by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was an up-and-down season for Sauer, who provided the Dodgers’ bullpen with some much-needed relief throughout the spring and summer months with multiple injuries to the Dodgers’ pitching staff.

Overall, the righty went 2-1 with a 6.37 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in ten appearances with Los Angeles, with his last appearance being on August 22nd before he was optioned back to Triple-A after the activation of Tanner Scott from the 15-day injured list.

That represented the fifth time this season Sauer was optioned to the Minors. It’s the most allowed for one year under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), meaning that if recalled, he’d have to clear waivers if he was optioned back down to the minors.

Sauer did clear waivers, but the team opted to release him.

Sauer inked a minor league contract with the Dodgers during the offseason, and despite having long odds to make the roster on Opening Day, the 26-year-old was able to join the team during their two-game series in Tokyo, Japan, although he made no appearance.

Sauer posted decent numbers from the start of the season until June, where the righty had a 3.05 ERA and 4.21 FIP through 20.2 innings of work; however, things took a turn for the worse when he rejoined the club in June and July, ballooning his ERA to over six.

Sauer, now a free agent, is free to sign with any team, but with it being after September 1st, he would be postseason ineligible if he joined a contender.
