Dodgers News: Dodgers’ Tommy Edman Set to Open 2026 on Injured List After Offseason Ankle Surgery

Dave Roberts confirmed the Dodgers will be without Tommy Edman to start 2026, as the utility standout works back from ankle surgery.

LOS ANGELES, CA—While the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers approached spring training with optimism about utilityman Tommy Edman’s ankle. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that the 2024 NLCS MVP won’t be ready by Opening Day.

Edman, 30, was limited to just 97 games last season due to multiple stints on the injured list due to an injured ankle, and derailed the Dodgers’ initial plan to have Edman be more of the team’s primary center fielder rather than the primary second baseman.

Still, Edman was able to get healthy enough for the postseason, primarily playing second base, but after the conclusion of the Fall Classic, Edman underwent successful ankle surgery.

Although Edman was eager to make the Opening Day roster, he emphasized that his health came first and stated he would not rush his ankle.

“If it comes around to that time and my ankle is 90%, not quite where I need it to be, I’m going to do my best to be patient with it and get it back to 100% and not deal with it for the rest of the year,” Edman said at DodgerFest.

In Edman’s absence, Roberst confirmed that a rotation involving veteran Miguel Rojas, Hyeseong Kim, and Alex Freeland would be considered to start at second, with Roberts further elaborating that it was fair to say Kim and Freeland were competing for the same spot this spring.
