Dodgers News: Dodgers Unveil “City Connect” Unis

LOS ANGELES — The “City Connect” idea takes a page from the NBA’s playbook: have specially designed alternate uniforms for teams that can be worn to honor the city in which they play. The Miami Marlins had some sweet unis that were based on the old uniforms of the “Cuban Sugar Kings” back in Havana. The Red Sox uniforms were meant to honor Patriot Day in that city and the Boston Marathon. And now, the Dodgers have given us a sneak peak of the LA “City Connect Jerseys”, and I have to say, they’re pretty sweet.

I guess we could call them the “Los Dodgers” uniforms, as that name appears both on the jersey and the hat. Both the pants and the jersey are Dodger blue, so the monochromatic nature of the uniform is quite striking. Other than the lettering, they look a lot like the Spring Training alternate uniforms that the team sometimes wears in Arizona. It looks like there is a little black “spray paint” accent along the sleeve of the jersey as well that gives the uniform a little bit of an edgy feel.

“The Dodger uniform is an iconic part of the franchise’s identity,”said Lon Rosen, Dodger Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “While our traditional look has and will always be worn by the franchise-great players, the City Connect program offered us the opportunity to recognize the impact and importance of our multicultural fanbase,”

The uniforms will make their debut on the field this weekend, Friday (Aug. 20) and Saturday (Aug. 21) during the Dodgers’ games vs. the New York Mets. “We’re excited to debut these City Connect uniforms on the field,” Rosen continued, “and know our fans will enjoy seeing ‘Los Dodgers’ on the uniforms as well as our new murals, which bring Los Angeles’ street art culture to Dodger Stadium.”

The murals are located on the Left and Right Field Loge Terraces. As part of the launch, the Dodgers also worked with local artists Jonas Swyer, Fernando Valdez Zamora, Michelle Ruby Guerrero, Hector Arias, Chris Corona and Michael Villanueva Matugas to bring the city’s street art culture to Dodger Stadium with these vibrant paintings of Dodger players that wouldn’t look out of place on the side of a barber shop in Boyle Heights or Huntington Park.

I’ve been kind of meh about some of the other City Connect jerseys, but I think this Dodgers one is pretty groovy all around. Let’s hope they bring the Dodgers good luck this weekend as the team pushes for the playoffs.
