Dodgers News: Dodgers VP of Baseball Operations Leaves Organization for Rockies GM Opening
Long-time VP of Baseball Operations Josh Byrnes is leaving for the open Rockies GM position

LOS ANGELES, CA—After running the most successful Major League Baseball franchise over the last ten-plus years and winning back-to-back titles this past season, it was only a matter of time before rival organizations started to poach members within to build their own successful teams.
Last season, after defeating the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic, we saw Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough take the open Miami Marlins manager job. A similar situation happened with former base coach Chris Woodward, who left the organization several years ago for his own manager gig with the Texas Rangers.
Well, that trend has continued today with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reporting that Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Josh Byrnes is taking the open General Manager position for the Dodgers’ National League West rival, the Colorado Rockies.
The Washington Nationals previously approached Byrnes regarding their general manager vacancy earlier this year. He was also a candidate for the president of baseball operations position with the Detroit Tigers before they hired Scott Harris. Additionally, the Boston Red Sox had considered hiring Byrnes in the past.
Byrnes served as the senior vice president of baseball operations for the Dodgers for 11 seasons, overseeing the club’s scouting and player development.
Since his first season in 2015, the Dodgers have posted the best record in baseball, winning eight division titles, five National League pennants, and the World Series titles in 2020, 2024, and 2025.
Byrnes previously held the roles of executive vice president and general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005 to 2010, and for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2014.
Byrnes began his front office career with the Cleveland Indians, serving as an advance scout from 1995 to 1996 before being promoted to Director of Scouting in June 1998.
He also served as an assistant manager for the Colorado Rockies from 1999 to 2003, before joining the Red Sox organization, where he held the same role from 2003 to 2005.
