Dustin May has officially earned the Dodgers’ fifth spot in the rotation, beating out Tony Gonsolin and others, including Bobby Miller. Gonsolin had been in contention for the role before suffering a “minor” back injury earlier this week.
Roberts made the revelation during an interview with Clint Pasillas and Alanna Rizzo on DodgersTerritory. The trio recapped the road to the World Series last year, and the club’s turning the page to focus on the season ahead.
This announcement marks the culmination of a nearly two-year recovery for May. He underwent Tommy John and flexor tendon surgery before an emergency esophageal procedure caused by a lodged piece of lettuce further derailed his comeback last season. His previous major league appearance came on May 17, 2023, and just as he was rehabbing his elbow, the unexpected setback kept him off the mound for the remainder of the year.
This spring, May has shown flashes of dominance while naturally working through some inconsistencies as he readjusts to MLB competition. He pitched three innings in his most recent outing, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out three. His resilience has been particularly impressive as he bounces back from difficult outings, a testament to his mental and physical toughness.
May’s journey has been anything but easy, with injuries repeatedly forcing him off the field. Now, as he returns to the Dodgers’ rotation healthy, his presence on the mound will be a welcome sight. If he can stay on track, he has the potential to make a significant impact throughout the 2025 season.
