Dodgers News: Edman Expected to be Activated Off IL on Sunday; Hernández to Start Rehab Assignment this Weekend

LOS ANGELES— The Los Angeles Dodgers have been without utilityman Tommy Edman and 2024 National League All-Star Teoscar Hernández since the start of May, but that will soon change.

According to Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, both players are expected to be activated in the coming days, leaving the team to decide who the odd man out on the roster will be.

Edman, 30, has missed the last several weeks after tweaking his ankle during the middle game of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Dodger Stadium in late April.

It was the same ankle that the Gold Glove Award-winning second baseman injured during his first rehab stint last season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Edman was eligible to be activated off the 10-day injured list last Saturday while the team was in Arizona, but with Chase Field being artificial turf, the team opted to hold off.

Instead, Edman has continued his normal baseball activities, such as defensive play, live hitting, and running. During that road series in Arizona last week, Edman stated that his ankle was at about 80%.

Per Roberts, Edman will not need a rehab stint and is expected to rejoin the team on Sunday for the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels this weekend.

Hernández, 32, has been out since early May after aggravating his left groin while tracking a ball down in the outfield gap. Roberts initially believed that it would be a lengthy stint on the injured list but was relieved that it would only be a possible two-week hiatus.

Like Edman, Hernández has also been keeping up with all his baseball activities, including live at-bats against Dodgers right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who is on the 60-day injured list rehabbing from last year’s Tommy John surgery.

Hernández will begin a short minor league rehab assignment with the Single-A Rancho Quakes this weekend. If all goes well, he should rejoin the team on Monday.

Edman (.252/.295/.523, .818 OPS) and Hernández (.315/.333/.600, .933 OPS) were massive players in the Dodgers’ offense and will be great additions when both rejoin the team.

However, the Dodgers’ next dilemma when both players return after this weekend is what to do with rookie Hyeseong Kim, who has played very well in his short stint this season, but that’s a question for later.
