Dodgers News: Freddie day-to-day after shower “mishap” tweaks ankle

LOS ANGELES, CA – Dodger fans may have noticed a big name missing from the lineup on Monday—Freddie Freeman. The always-dependable first baseman was scratched due to what manager Dave Roberts called a “mishap in the shower.” Yes, really.

According to Roberts, Freddie slipped while stepping into the shower—possibly at home—and tweaked his ankle. The incident likely happened Saturday or Sunday night, and while it’s not a major injury, it did cause some swelling. Freeman showed up at the ballpark the next day for treatment and reportedly told the team he felt like he could play. Still, Roberts and the staff opted to play it safe.

“He feels that he could go out there and play,” Roberts said. “But just kind of the upside-downside, kind of doing the math, [we decided to] let him recoup today and we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

The good news? This doesn’t look like anything long-term. In fact, Roberts emphasized that Freddie was already improving the next day and could be back in the lineup very soon. But it’s also worth noting that Freeman’s ankle hadn’t been 100% even before the slip, so this might be a good opportunity to give him a bit of rest while it’s still early in the season.

Fans can take some comfort in knowing that if Freeman had to sit, now is a better time than later in the year. And as Dodger fans know, it takes a lot to keep Freddie out of action—Roberts even joked that it’s rare to hear Freddie say he can’t play.

“Has Freddie ever thought he couldn’t play?” Roberts laughed. “You know what, I did see it last year… during the CS, that was rough sledding. But yeah, for the most part, he’s always kicking and screaming.”

So, for now, it’s day-to-day. With the Dodgers in a long haul for what they hope will be another deep playoff run, giving a little cushion to a key player like Freeman makes sense. We’ll keep an eye out for updates and hope to see number 5 back in action very soon.

Stay tuned, Dodger fans—and maybe take it slow stepping into the shower tonight.

Other Injury Updates:

  • Evan Phillips & Tony Gonsolin: Next steps likely rehab assignments.
  • Michael Grove: Trending in the right direction after ramping up from a period of limited throwing.
  • Clayton Kershaw: Threw a live session, felt good, and will join the team in D.C. Still no firm return timeline but progressing steadily.

Let’s hope for a healthy stretch ahead. Go Dodgers!
