Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared positive news with the media on Wednesday, announcing that first baseman Freddie Freeman is expected to return to the lineup this Friday.
Freeman was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 3rd after a slip in the shower led to a minor reinjury of his right ankle. While the injury wasn’t considered serious, the absence of the Dodgers’ star slugger was felt immediately, especially during a difficult East Coast road trip.
Without Freeman, Los Angeles dropped back-to-back series against the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals. Known for his consistency at the plate and ability to deliver in key moments, Freeman’s absence left a noticeable void in the lineup.
Before landing on the IL, Freeman was hitting .250 with two home runs and a robust 1.038 OPS, a strong start highlighting his continued value as a run producer and clubhouse leader. Beyond his bat, Freeman brings invaluable stability to the infield and sets the tone for a roster loaded with postseason expectations.
In response to the injury, the Dodgers recalled catcher Hunter Feduccia from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 26-year-old, collecting two at-bats without a hit, appeared in both games against the Nationals. With Freeman’s return looming, Feduccia will likely be optioned back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
In the meantime, Kiké Hernández has been filling in at first base. While he’s handled the position well defensively, his offensive output hasn’t matched the production typically expected from Freeman’s spot in the order.
Freeman’s return couldn’t come at a better time, as the Dodgers prepare to open a homestand looking to reset and regain momentum. With his bat back in the lineup and his steady presence on the field, the Dodgers will be in a much better position to bounce back from their recent struggles.
