PHILADELPHIA— The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed all-star first baseman Freddie Freeman on the 10-day Injured List retroactive March 31st. No corresponding move has been made yet on the active roster.
Freeman, 35, has missed the last three games after slipping in the shower at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday, injuring the same ankle he had surgery on this offseason. However, he was confident enough that he could play during the series finale against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
Still, Freeman admitted he understood how the organization works and would try to keep him out until the following series in Philadelphia against the Phillies, kicking off a six-game road trip on the East Coast.
The Dodgers had today off as their travel day, and the team announced that Freeman would now be transferred to the Injured List.
Freeman missed five of the Dodgers’ first eight games, missing the first two in Tokyo, Japan, due to a lingering rib injury that plagued him last October, and now, he has a reinjury to his ankle.
On the bright side, Freeman stated that the x-rays on his ankle had come back clean, and despite not playing Wednesday and being placed on the injured list today, he was a full participant during pregame workouts.
With the Dodgers having a slew of left-handed starters over the next two series, including two in Philadelphia (Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sánchez), the Dodgers likely did not want to send a non-100% Freeman to the plate in what is expected to be a highly contested series.
While the Dodgers have not offically announced a corresponding move, looking at the 40-man roster, the team has a few options.
The Dodgers’ only possible position player call-ups are Hyeseong Kim, Hunter Feduccia, Esteury Ruiz, and James Outman.
However, I’d bet that Kim is the one to get the call and make his Major League debut after hitting over .280 in his first full week of Triple-A action with the Oklahoma City Comets.
