LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to be without all-star first baseman Freddie Freeman again for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves after he reinjured his ankle in a shower mishap.
Prior to the start of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves to close out the Dodgers’ six-game homestand, Freeman, 35, injured the same ankle he had surgically repaired this offseason.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the ankle is not as severe as last October, but some swelling forced him to miss yesterday’s series opener and considered day-to-day for the rest of the series.
Well, today’s Dodgers starting lineup is indeed missing Freddie Freeman, who was replaced in back-to-back days by Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández.
In a pregame interview, Freeman stated that his X-rays were negative and had a good sense of humor about the whole situation.
The situation occurred because Freeman’s main shower was leaking. Sunday morning, he tried stepping into his tub/shower in the guest room and fell on his ankle.
Despite having three hours worth of daily treatment and hoping to rejoin the Dodgers lineup as soon as tomorrow, he understands that the team may play it safe and push his return to Friday for the Dodgers marquee matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies.
If that were the case, Freeman would have missed over half the Dodgers eight games this season after already missing the first two games in Tokyo, Japan, and possibly the entire series against his former squad, the Atlanta Braves, this week.
In non-injury news, Freeman also stated that he would not be one of the players in Major League Baseball switching to the famous torpedo bat that has made headlines over the first week of the season.
“I’ve swung the same bat for 16 years,” Freeman said, and he’s not changing it.
