We are over a month removed from the last game of the 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, which saw Los Angeles win its eighth championship in five games.
However, the World Series Most Valuable Player, Freddie Freeman, who battled an injured ankle all postseason, has offically undergone surgery, according to the Dodgers today.
The team earlier this afternoon stated that all-star first baseman Freddie Freeman underwent surgery on his right ankle, consisting of debridement and the removal of loose bodies. Dr. Kenneth Jung performed the surgery at Kerlan Jobe in Los Angeles. Freeman is expected to be able to participate in baseball activities during Spring Training.
The story of Freeman’s Iron Man mentality did not go unnoticed in the sports world. The fifteen-year veteran severely sprained his ankle in the Dodgers’ National League West clinching game in late September, missing the final three games of the regular season.
Despite the setback, Freeman played in thirteen of the Dodgers’ sixteen games but really turned it on in the World Series, where the lefty hit .300 batting average with six hits, four homers, twelve RBIs, and five runs scored in five games.
Freeman is the latest Dodgers to undergo surgery this offseason, with veteran left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw having toe and knee surgery, two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani undergoing labrum surgery, and a slew of surgeries that hit the team just before the end of the season.
This is just the latest development in the Freeman family, as it is well documented by the struggle he and his family endured with his son Maximus, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in the summer.
Overall, Freeman and his family seem to be in great spirits, as he and his son are expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the 2025 season.
