Dodgers News: Glasnow faces hitters (and one guest star) prior to Tuesday’s game with Padres

"Tyler's in a Good Spot."

LOS ANGELES — Another key piece of the Dodgers’ rotation is making strides. Tyler Glasnow, sidelined with back tightness since late May, threw two simulated innings and impressed Roberts with both his command and stuff. “It was pretty good,” the manager said with a grin. “His entire mix, two innings, call it 40 pitches — command, execution, kind of stuff in itself.”

If Glasnow continues on this track, the next steps could come quickly. “He’ll probably throw a pen here in a few days and then whether it’s another simulated game or going out on a rehab assignment, I think Tyler’s in a good spot,” Roberts noted. “Three [rehab starts] is probably a fair kind of number.”

But not everything in Glasnow’s session went according to script — he surrendered a hit to Dodgers broadcaster and former big leaguer Jerry Hairston Jr., drawing some clubhouse laughs. “That’s going to be… there might be some permanent scarring on that one,” Roberts joked. “If anyone in the organization got a hit, I wouldn’t want it to be Jerry.”

More important than that bloop single, though, was Roberts’ sense that Glasnow is close to regaining the form he showed before the injury. “He’s certainly healthy… the delivery, the nuances of it, there’s a little difference, but I really — with my eye — can’t see the difference,” Roberts said. “It still looks athletic.”

He added that the mental side of Glasnow’s rehab is progressing, too. “He is a very cerebral guy,” Roberts explained. “As he starts to get out on rehab, get closer to competition… my encouragement is to get more external. Start trying to get hitters out versus thinking about your delivery.”

More good news for a team that has somehow managed to stay in first place without their big guns on the mound. Bodes well for the rest of the summer.

A lifelong baseball fan, Webb has been going to Dodger games since he moved to Los Angeles in 1987. His favorite memory was sitting in an apartment in October 1988 when Gibby went yard against Eckersley in the World Series. Which came about ten minutes after he declared “this game is over!” Hopefully, his baseball acumen has improved since then. He has been writing for Dodgersbeat since 2020.
