The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for a massive three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, but before that, they lose a huge arm in their starting rotation. Right-handed pitcher and first-time all-star Tyler Glasnow has been placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive Sunday, July 7th.
In his place, the Dodgers have recalled right-handed flame thrower Michael Petersen, who was optioned back to the minor leagues this past weekend.
Typically, when a pitcher is optioned down, there is a waiting period before they can be recalled. However, there are exceptions to this rule, such as in the case of an injury, which is the situation this time.
Peterson will join a Dodgers bullpen expected to pitch heavily this series. Thursday’s series finale is set to be a potential bullpen game even though Dave Roberts confirmed right-handed pitcher Landon Knack was due to start.
Back to Glasnow, it is not shocking that the starter ended up on the injured list this season, as the righty has battled injuries throughout his major league career.
The 2023 season was the healthiest of Glasnow’s career, and the former Tampa Bay Ray pitched a career-high one hundred and twenty innings.
As we entered the month of July, Glasnow was fast approaching his previous career high, and many fans, including myself, wondered if the Dodgers would try to “load manage” his innings for the rest of the season.
Glasnow has pitched one hundred nine innings this season, which is just eleven shy of his career-high, and is the leader in strikeouts in the National League.
When asked if the injury was serious, Dave Roberts dismissed it, stating that it was just back tightness before Sunday’s game when the righty was playing catch.
When asked if the Dodgers would use this as a way to limit his innings moving forward after the all-star break, Roberts quickly shot that notion down.
Thankfully, the Dodgers have six more games before they get their first break of the season as the starting rotation with injuries to Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, and rookie Gavin Stone pitching his first full season is a cause for concern.
