Dodgers News: Gomes Provides Update on Gavin Stone & River Ryan

It's full systems go for Gavin Stone and River Ryan in 2026

LOS ANGELES, CA—At the end of the 2025 regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting rotation turned into the team’s strength heading into October, and that proved to be the difference as the team rode its starters to a second consecutive World Series victory.

However, two names that were not part of the Dodgers ride were young right-handers Gavin Stone and River Ryan, as each missed the entire regular season rehabbing from their injuries.

Well, that is set to change for the upcoming 2026 season as both starters are expected to be ready to go next spring, per Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes.

In a column from Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group, Gomes confirmed that both arms would be ready for a typical season, or as typical as you can expect from a player returning from injury.

Pitchers River Ryan and Gavin Stone, who are both returning from surgery, are expected to be ready for spring training and a “normal” buildup, Gomes said. “We expect them to have a pretty normal year, whatever a normal year is coming off surgery.”

Both players’ roles for the organization moving forward are in limbo, as the Dodgers’ current starting rotation is full of arms, including Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Emmet Sheehan, and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Of the two arms, Gavin Stone is the most polished, as the right-hander had a tremendous rookie season in 2024, posting a 3.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 116 strikeouts across 140.1 innings pitched before undergoing season-ending right shoulder surgery.

Ryan, 27, also made his debut during the 2024 season; however, it was short-lived before the right-hander went down with a UCL injury. However, before that, he looked fantastic, holding a 1.33 ERA across 20.1 innings.

Stone and Ryan, although currently on the outside hoping to make the Opening Day roster, can bolster their chances by delivering strong performances in Spring Training, demonstrating their value when a need comes up.

The Dodgers could also look to trade from their surplus of pitching for help elsewhere, such as the bullpen or the outfield, while clearing up some spots on the 40-man roster, which now sits at 39 players.
