LOS ANGELES, CA — Infield and noted relief pitcher Hanser Albert was busy with some good-deed doing prior to Tuesday’s game with the Giants.

For National Read A Book Day and as part of LA Reads, Alberto read to students at Washington Accelerated Elementary School in Pasadena. He read from Brad Meltzer’s read-aloud book, I am Jackie Robinson to the children and stuck around to interact with the students and staff. The first year Dodger was all smiles as usual, and had a treat for the kids in attendance. Everybody got their own copy of the book to take home and read again.

Celebrated every September 6th and timed to coincide with the kickoff of the school year, National Read a Book Day encourages readers of all ages to carve out some time in their busy schedule and do some good old fashioned reading.

The book that was the focus of Hanser’s visit, I am Jackie Robinson, was written by Brad Metzler in 2015. Told in graphic novel style, it chronicles the story well known to Dodger fans of Jackie Robinson’s rise to become the first Black player in the major leagues when he debuted with the Dodgers in 1947.

Looks like a good one. If you have a young reader who might like a copy, you can order one here.

Thanks for the effort, Hanser. You gave the kids a memory to last a lifetime!
