Dodgers News: Kim drives in run as Korea romps in WBC opener

Team Korea rolls as the WBC is underway

TOKYO, JAPAN — We can forgive you if you were having a tough time keeping track of who’s who in Team Korea’s 11-4 win of Czechia in its WBC opener on Thursday. After all, there were THREE guys named Kim in the starting lineup.

However, for Dodgers’ fans, there was one Kim in particular that we’re keeping an eye on: our very own Hyeseong Kim, who is vying for a spot in the Opening Day starting lineup. He didn’t do a whole lot to bolster his case in Team Korea’s victory, but he showed off some timely situational hitting that helped plate a run.

First, this game was pretty much over as soon as it began. Bo Gyeong Moon hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first, and Astros prospect Shay Whitcomb added a pair of homers, so by the time Hyeseong figured in the scoring, the game was safely in Korean hands. However, that doesn’t mean Kim’s contribution missed our notice. With a runner on third and one out in the sixth, Kim hit a ground ball to shortstop to score Min Jae Shin with Team Korea’s tenth run of the ballgame. Always good to see our Dodgers get the runner home from third with less than two outs, even if it is across the Pacific Ocean.

In all, the Comet was 0-for-3 with one walk and the one RBI. In other play in Tokyo, Team Australia came up with a somewhat surprising 3-0 shutout win over Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), which puts the Taiwanese team really behind the 8-ball as they face Samurai Japan on Friday.
