Dodgers News: Hyeseong Kim Heading to the IL; Alex Freeland Promoted

The Dodgers have promoted their No. 3 prospect Alex Freeland and placed Hyeseong Kim on the 10-day IL

CINCINNATI, OH—It was reported at the start of yesterday’s game by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic that the Los Angeles Dodgers were promoting their number three-ranked prospect Alex Freeland from Triple-A OKC; however, the corresponding move was yet to be determined until now.

To make room on the 26-man roster for Freeland’s activation, the Dodgers announced that they’ve placed left-handed hitting utilityman Hyeseong Kim on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder bursitis.

During the weekend in Boston, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that rookie utility player Hyeseong Kim had been managing a left shoulder injury for the past five or six days.

Kim, 26, quickly gained popularity after a fiery debut in his Major League career following his call-up in May. Although he posted an elite slash line, the Dodgers hesitated to give the former KBO star regular playing time, especially refusing to play him against left-handed pitchers.

However, following Max Muncy’s injury in July—which moved Tommy Edman, the team’s main second baseman, to third base—Kim was finally provided with more opportunities to bat.

Since then, Kim’s numbers have dipped across the board.

Kim has struggled this month (as has much of the Dodgers’ offense), hitting .204/.218/.222 with a .440 OPS and 20 wRC+, along with seeing his strikeout rate nearly double to 40.0% in fifty-four at-bats.

Still, Kim was in the lineup yesterday but proceeded to go 0-for-3 with two more punchouts, but all signs pointed to Tommy Edman hitting the injured list, not Kim.

Freeland, 23, the Dodgers’ No. 3 ranked prospect, has been excellent in Triple-A this season, slashing .253/.372/.416 with a .788 OPS, mixing between shortstop and second base.

With Max Muncy set to begin a minor league rehab assignment tonight playing third base, the Dodgers are giving Freeland a chance to be with the big league club likely until Muncy returns, possibly by the Dodgers’ next homestand.
