Dodgers News: Injury Plagued Season Gave Dodgers Club Option for Blake Snell

Due to missing significant time on the IL in 2025, the Dodgers may have picked up a $10 million club option on Snell for 2030

LOS ANGELES, CA—Although the Los Angeles Dodgers secured a World Series win in 2024 with limited starting pitching, Andrew Friedman’s front office was eager to avoid encountering that situation again.

This prompted the Dodgers to act quickly in last year’s free agent market, signing two-time Cy Young Award winner left-hander Blake Snell to a multi-year deal after he chose to opt out of his contract with the San Francisco Giants, their National League West rival.

Overall, Snell signed a five-year contract worth $182 million, including a $52 million signing bonus and deferred salary, in line with the Dodgers’ usual approach.

While Snell was a key factor in the Dodgers’ back-to-back championships, his regular season was disrupted by injuries, as he spent over half the season on the injured list due to a left shoulder injury.

Snell was on the injured list for a total of 119 days last season. This could benefit the Dodgers, as the extended IL time led the team to exercise a $10 million club option for the 2030 season.

Despite limited opportunities in Snell’s first year with the Dodgers, the left-hander posted a 5-4 record, a 2.35 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and an impressive 10.6 K/9 over 61.1 innings in 11 starts.

As mentioned earlier, Snell was also a key contributor for the Dodgers this October, finishing with a 3-2 record and a 3.18 ERA across six postseason games, including eight shutout innings in Game One of the National League Championship Series versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Dodgers and Snell are optimistic that his shoulder injury is resolved and that he can have a full season with Los Angeles in 2026. However, if he needs time off, the team has one of the deepest pitching staffs in the league.
