Dodgers News: Is Edwin Díaz a Real Possibility for the Dodgers?
With Devin Williams moving to Queens, is Edwin Díaz on his way out, and might the Dodgers be the ideal destination?

LOS ANGELES, CA—One of the main issues the Los Angeles Dodgers will focus on this offseason is their bullpen, especially a late-inning right-handed pitcher they lacked last season.
Despite challenges from Tanner Scott and seasoned relievers Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen, the Dodgers managed to overcome their bullpen issues in the second half of the 2025 season and secured the World Series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, largely thanks to their depth of top-tier starting pitchers.
Nevertheless, Andrew Friedman and his team aim to strengthen the bullpen core, while also hoping for bounce-back seasons from Scott and Treinen, and expecting returns from Brock Stewart and possibly Evan Phillips, who the team non-tendered a few weeks ago.
One name the Dodgers were linked to early on was former National League All-Star closer Devin Williams, with reports stating that both sides had mutual interest in a partnership.
However, that is now over, with Williams reportedly inking a 3-year, $51 million contract with some deferments per MLB insider Jon Heyman.
With Williams off the board and signing a multi-year contract with no opt-outs, the next big question is, where does that leave closer Edwin Díaz?
After the season, Díaz chose to forgo the last two years of his record-breaking five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets, aiming to secure a comparable multi-year deal in free agency this time.
It’s not surprising that Díaz has been one of the league’s top closers in recent years, converting 28 of 31 save opportunities with a 1.63 ERA last season.
One factor that might concern teams like the Dodgers is losing a draft pick, as Díaz declined the Mets’ $22.025 million qualifying offer in November.
However, the need for a lockdown closer for Los Angeles is there.
Scott blew 10 saves for the Dodgers in 2025. Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen also faced difficulties in closing games, which led to Sasaki being assigned that role during the playoffs. This is a major reason why they are considering options in the closer market. Díaz seems the most logical choice if they plan to spend heavily.
Still, it would be rare in a back-to-back offseason that the Dodgers from the office would shell out big dollars to relief arms, after showing an unwillingness to do so in years past.
Mets insider Anthony DiComo mentioned in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” thread that if Díaz does not return to Queens, the Dodgers would be the obvious alternative and considered the frontrunners for signing him.
“And if everything I wrote above is true, I’d have to consider the Dodgers the favorite to grab him, if for no other reason than that they are the Dodgers.”
However, the Mets still have a chance of reuniting with Díaz, especially since the newly signed pitcher Devin Williams is open to a setup role, similar to his role with the New York Yankees last season.
