LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers made a flurry of roster moves on their Thursday travel day before they begin their season-long ten-game road trip.
With the Dodgers set to play ten games in ten days, they added some much-needed fresh arms to their bullpen, especially with injuries to lefty Blake Snell and, most recently, Tyler Glasnow in the starting rotation.
Announced by the team earlier today, the Dodgers claimed right-handed pitcher J.P. Feyereisen off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Loutos from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitchers Blake Treinen and Michael Kopech to the 60-day injured list.
It’ll be the second stint for J.P. Feyereisen and the Dodgers after Los Angeles signed the righty during the 2023 offseason in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Minor League pitcher Jeff Belge.
Feyereisen missed the entire 2023 season due to recovery from shoulder surgery but would make the Dodgers Opening Day roster last season, including the 31-player travel roster for the Seoul Series.
However, the results were bleak for Feyereisen, who posted a 0-1 record and 8.18 ERA with the Dodgers before being sent to the minors. Even with the Triple-A OKC Baseball Club (OKC Comets), Feyereisen only posted a 5.40 ERA, leading the Dodgers to outright the righty off the 40-man roster last summer.
Feyereisen signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks in March and has appeared in two innings for the Snakes this season with an ERA of nine.
Ryan Loutos, 26, was an undrafted free agent within the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, making his Major League debut last summer tossing 2.1 scoreless innings for the Red Birds.
Loutos was an elite arm talent for the Cardinals minor league bullpen, pitching fifty-three innings, collecting eighteen saves, and logging a 3.40 ERA for Triple-A Memphis.
Despite the limited opportunity, the Cardinals DFA’d the right-hander on April 28th as the corresponding move to promote infielder Jose Barrero.
Dodgers hard-throwing right-handed pitcher Michael Kopech is still progressing his throwing program and should be able to face live hitters in the next two weeks.
Despite being transferred to the 60-day injured list, the earliest Kopech can be activated is May 17th, as the injury date is backdated to the start of the 2025 regular season.
Veteran right-handed relief pitcher Blake Treinen has yet to pick up a baseball after an MRI revealed a Grade One right forearm strain, promoting the Dodgers to place the righty on the 15-day injured list last month.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that the team is slow playing their rehab for Snell and Treinen, prioritizing innings in the second half of the season rather than April or May.
The Dodgers bullpen needs the arms as they’ve pitched the most innings in baseball at 131, ten more innings than the Miami Marlins bullpen.
