Prior to tonight’s game against the Boston Red Sox, which kicks off the second half of the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly from the 60-day injured list.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers placed left-handed pitcher Jose Hernandez on waivers during the all-star break. Hernandez ultimately cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A OKC.
Right-handed pitcher Michael Peterson was also optioned to Triple-A to make room for Kelly on the 26-man roster.
Kelly, 36, has missed most of the season on the injured list with a shoulder strain that the righty suffered back in May. Since then, it has been an uphill battle to rejoin the club, and despite getting healthier, the results in his minor league rehab assignments were bleak.
In five appearances throughout Single-A and Triple-A, Kelly posted a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings pitched while only striking out three batters and having a 2.45 WHIP.
The Dodgers bullpen, however, could use a “fresh” arm to help manage the workload, as the starting pitching has not done them any favors this past month.
Kelly will be activated tonight and is expected to join the team in their series against the Red Sox.
