LOS ANGELES, CA — In another late move, the Dodgers have acquired veteran centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier from the Toronto Blue Jays. In return, the Jays will be receiving pitcher Ryan Yarbrough, who was DFA’ed earlier this week.

Kevin Kiermaier, born on April 22, 1990, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has established himself as one of Major League Baseball’s premier defensive outfielders. Kiermaier attended Parkland College in Illinois, where his exceptional performance on the field earned him attention from scouts. The Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the 31st round of the 2010 MLB Draft, marking the beginning of his professional career.

Kiermaier quickly rose through the Rays’ minor league system, making his MLB debut in September 2013. His breakout season came in 2014, when he showcased his remarkable defensive abilities and solid hitting. Kiermaier’s speed, range, and strong arm made him a standout center fielder, earning him the nickname “The Outlaw.”

In 2015, Kiermaier’s defensive prowess was officially recognized when he won his first Gold Glove Award. He led all major league outfielders in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), a testament to his ability to prevent runs and make game-changing plays. Kiermaier’s performance that year also earned him the Platinum Glove Award, given to the best defensive player in each league.

Kiermaier continued to excel defensively in the following years, winning additional Gold Glove Awards in 2016 and 2019. His contributions in the outfield were crucial for the Rays, helping them reach the postseason multiple times. Kiermaier’s offensive production, while not as prominent as his defense, included timely hitting and speed on the bases.

Injuries have been a part of Kiermaier’s career, causing him to miss significant time in several seasons. Despite these setbacks, he remained a vital component of the Rays’ roster, known for his leadership and determination. His ability to make highlight-reel catches and game-saving plays kept him as a fan favorite in Tampa Bay.

After a decade with the Rays, Kiermaier signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023. The Blue Jays sought to enhance their outfield defense, and Kiermaier’s track record made him an ideal fit.

So now, he will come to LA. Kiermaier has already announced that 2024 is his last rodeo. What will his role be in the Dodger outfield? Well, his defense prowess is without question, and he can still run it down in centerfield. However, his bat, never all that great, is pretty poor this season: he’s hitting .195 with a rather anemic OPS of .546. So obviously, he won’t be starting a lot of games, especially against left-handers. But as a defensive replacement in a tight game, or a pinch runner in extra innings, he’s a solid acquisition.
