Before yesterday’s Rule 5 roster deadline, the Dodgers added three players to the 40-man roster, protecting them from being taken in the Rule 5 draft next month. The Dodgers added Landon Knack, Hunter Feduccia, and Nick Frasso.
If you need a breakdown of how Rule 5 works, every player begins their Rule 5 clock when they sign their first professional contract. If they are 18 years old or younger on June 5 of the year they sign, they will not become Rule 5 eligible until after their fifth professional season. If they are 19 or older on June 5 of their signing year, they have four years before becoming eligible for Rule 5. Organizations can add Rule 5 eligible players to their 40-man rosters to prevent them from being taken by other teams.
The Dodgers 40-man roster prior to the deadline had 35 players, which, in theory, left five open spots for the roster; however, with LA looking to add this winter clearly, the Dodgers had to crunch the 36 players who were Rule 5 eligible to those projected five spots remaining.
The Dodgers current roster now sits at 38 players, and with the trade and free agent market expected to heat up next month with the Winter Meetings, expect the Dodgers to have more decisions on their plate regarding the roster for 2024.
