Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux suffered a torn ACL in yesterday’s spring training game against the Padres. While the Dodgers and Dave Roberts wanted to remain optimistic about the situation and hoped it was perhaps a strain, their worst fear was confirmed true after Lux’s MRI showed a tear ended his 2023 campaign.
Lux, who was finally lining up to be the Dodgers’ everyday shortstop, a position that two All-Star Shortstops have blocked in seasons past with Trea Turner and Corey Seager, it was finally his turn to take over. Lux has already been interviewed, going over the offseason and how he added muscle. He worked extensively with Miguel Vargas, potentially the starting 2nd baseman in 2023.
The Dodgers are now in a tough spot with Lux out for the whole season. While they have potential options internally to replace him with either Chris Taylor or Miguel Rojas, the Dodgers’ current roster construction was built around Lux being in there for a whole season. However, they will now have to adapt and overcome this significant loss on their roster.
However, what hurts the most about this loss is that Lux was finally given a chance to become the everyday shortstop, as that opportunity has been blocked ever since he was the Dodgers’ former number-one overall prospect in 2019. Lux has talked extensively about what it means to play for the Dodgers, what they mean to him as a player, and how he wants to live up to that hype.
Here at DodgersBeat, we wish Lux a speedy recovery and hope he still has an opportunity to take over as the Dodgers’ full-time shortstop in 2024.
