LOS ANGELES, CA — You can cross Dustin May off your wish list for 2024. He’s not going to be pitching for the Dodgers at anytime soon. According to numerous media reports, May, the right-handed pitcher, is out for the rest of the season because he had to get surgery on his esophagus. This all happened after he felt sudden pain while having dinner on Wednesday, and it got so bad that he had to call the team’s medical staff.
May’s been through a lot lately. He was already recovering from surgery last July for his flexor tendon and a previous Tommy John surgery on his elbow from 2021. He was making good progress and was even throwing bullpens, getting ready for a rehab assignment at the end of July.
Unfortunately, this new surgery means May has to stay away from physical activity for six to eight weeks. This is a big hit for the Dodgers, who are already struggling with a lot of injured pitchers, including big names like Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, and Clayton Kershaw. Rookie Bobby Miller has also been out with a shoulder injury and was recently sent down after a rough start to the season.
It’s tough because May had shown so much promise with his fast, powerful pitches when he first came on the scene in 2019. In his injury riddled career, May is 12-9 with a 3.10 ERA over 46 appearances, which includes 34 starts. And now, it’ll be while longer before Dodger fans get to see Code Red on the mound. Here’s hoping he can make a full recovery and get back on the mound soon.
