Given the recent season-ending injury to Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux, his ideal replacement Miguel Rojas has decided not to play for Venezuela in this year’s World Baseball Classic.
Rojas stated that he wants to get as many at-bats as possible while also getting into the swing of things as the Dodgers’ full-time shortstop, which will pair him with rookie Miguel Vargas at 2nd and Max Muncy at 3rd.
Rojas is also returning from having right wrist surgery to remove bone growth. During an appearance on Jomboy Media’s “The Chris Rose Rotation,” Rojas mentioned how the surgery came about.
What happened with this new thing that I had to do, we found an extra piece of bone that was growing on my wrist. So they had to take it out because it was bothering me when swinging the bat. It didn’t actually restrict me when hitting, but I didn’t want to start the season with pain. I’ve played through pain before and I know how it is. I don’t think early January is a time to play through pain, so to me, it was necessary to take care of this right now so I can be 100% and fully healthy for Spring Training, WBC and then to play for the Dodgers the whole year
However, Rojas also had a brief injury this spring after a right foot cramp after hitting a single in his second at-bat of the game. That said, it’s a no-brainer as to why, as difficult as it may be, the best decision for the team right now as they cannot afford to lose another shortstop to an injury.
Even with Lux now being sidelined for the 2023 season, I am excited to see how Miguel Rojas will attack his new opportunity for the Dodgers this year.
