Dodgers News: Mookie Betts Named 2025 Roberto Clemente Award Winner

Prior to Game Three of the World Series, Major League Baseball announced that Mookie Betts was this year's Roberto Clemente Award winner

LOS ANGELES, CA—Before the Game Three extra-inning walk-off thriller, Major League Baseball announced the winner of the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award, and it was Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star shortstop Mookie Betts.

Mookie Betts was awarded the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award, Major League Baseball’s top individual honor. This award annually honors an MLB player who exemplifies outstanding character, engages actively in the community, participates in philanthropy, and makes positive contributions both on and off the field.

Betts was nominated by the Los Angeles Dodgers for his numerous exceptional efforts, such as assisting young people in various ways and aiding victims of the Los Angeles fires. He was officially presented with the award before Game Three of the World Series began.

Betts, an eight-time MLB All-Star, 2018 American League MVP, and three-time World Series Champion, has also made significant humanitarian efforts, opening up opportunities and improving outcomes for those less fortunate.

In 2021, Betts and his wife, Brianna, founded the 5050 Foundation, aiming to “break barriers that hinder kids from reaching their potential, particularly those confronting medical and financial difficulties.” The foundation’s four pillars embody Betts’s key values: mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness.

That same year, “50 Feeds LA” was launched, with Betts partnering with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) to assist in feeding residents in South Los Angeles. Betts has contributed over $300,000, providing meals for thousands over the past three holiday seasons.

In 2023, Betts collaborated with LADF and the Brotherhood Crusade to distribute Thanksgiving meals to 1,500 families at Algin Sutton Recreation Center in South Los Angeles. The center held LADF’s third annual turkey giveaway, with volunteers providing meals, toys, and supplies through a drive-thru.

In 2023, 5050 Foundation expanded its outreach by organizing the annual Mookie Betts + Friends Bowling Tournament. A portion of the 2024 event’s proceeds was dedicated to upgrading facilities at Jackie Robinson’s high school, John Muir. These improvements encompassed renovating the dugouts, upgrading the outfield widescreens, and other projects designed to enhance the field’s amenities.

Betts and the 5050 Foundation visited UCLA Children’s Hospital, establishing the “Betts on Us Fund” to help families of pediatric patients obtain appropriate healthcare through financial support.

Betts expanded his efforts beyond Los Angeles by establishing “Team Mookie” in Nashville. His 16U elite boys’ basketball team, affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), secured the EYBL Championship League Title this May.

Betts remains actively involved in Dodgers community programs, connecting with Make-A-Wish participants, UCLA Health patients, local students and athletes, and frequently participating in the annual “Dodgers Love LA Community Tour.”

Betts is now the fourth Dodgers player to receive the award, alongside Steve Garvey (1981), Clayton Kershaw (2012), and Justin Turner (2022).
