Dodgers News: Mookie Betts Nominated for Roberto Clemente Award

For the second consecutive season, Mookie Betts is the Los Angeles Dodgers' nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award.

LOS ANGELES, CA—As the 2025 regular season enters its final weeks, Major League Baseball has started announcing its nominees for various awards, with today marking the official announcement of the Roberto Clemente Award.

The Roberto Clemente Award is given each year to a Major League player who exemplifies the spirit of baseball through exceptional character, engagement with the community, philanthropy, and positive impacts both on and off the field.

Each team nominates one player who best represents those values for the award. This year, the Los Angeles Dodgers have nominated shortstop Mookie Betts.

For Betts, this is his second nomination and consecutive recognition from the club, having received the honor last season.

Fans can now vote for the Roberto Clemente Award winner at MLBTogether.com/clementeaward, available in both English and Spanish. Voting is open until the final day of the regular season, Sunday, September 28th. The fan vote will be considered as one vote in the overall selection, alongside votes from a distinguished panel.

The overall winner of the Roberto Clemente Award will be recognized at the 2025 World Series, chosen by a panel that includes representatives from the commissioner’s office, Capital One, MLB networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN, and TBS), MLB.com, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and Roberto Clemente’s children—Enrique, Luis, and Roberto Clemente Jr.

September 15th is designated as the annual Roberto Clemente Day by MLB, commemorating his humanitarian legacy and officially recognizing the team nominees for the yearly award.

In 2021, Betts and his wife, Brianna, established the 5050 Foundation, dedicated to “breaking barriers that prevent kids from reaching their potential, especially those facing medical and financial challenges.” The foundation’s four pillars reflect Betts’s core values: mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness.

That same year, “50 Feeds LA” was launched, with Betts partnering with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) to assist in feeding residents in South Los Angeles. Betts has contributed over $300,000, providing meals for thousands over the past three holiday seasons.

In 2023, Betts collaborated with LADF and the Brotherhood Crusade to distribute Thanksgiving meals to 1,500 families at Algin Sutton Recreation Center in South Los Angeles. The center held LADF’s third annual turkey giveaway, with volunteers providing meals, toys, and supplies through a drive-thru.

In 2023, 5050 Foundation expanded its outreach by organizing the annual Mookie Betts + Friends Bowling Tournament. A portion of the 2024 event’s proceeds was dedicated to upgrading facilities at Jackie Robinson’s high school, John Muir. These improvements encompassed renovating the dugouts, upgrading the outfield widescreens, and other projects designed to enhance the field’s amenities.

Betts and the 5050 Foundation visited UCLA Children’s Hospital, establishing the “Betts on Us Fund” to assist families of pediatric patients in obtaining appropriate healthcare through financial support.

Betts expanded his efforts beyond Los Angeles by establishing “Team Mookie” in Nashville. His 16U elite boys’ basketball team, affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), secured the EYBL Championship League Title this May.

Betts remains actively involved in Dodgers community programs, connecting with Make-A-Wish participants, UCLA Health patients, local students and athletes, and frequently participating in the annual “Dodgers Love LA Community Tour.”
